Directing Biography & Repertoire
Dean Anthony has collaborated with companies worldwide as a Character Tenor, and most recently as an emerging Stage Director. His experience and innovative approach in performance aptly lend to his abilities as a director. "Dean Anthony has been associated with me in several operatic productions both as a performing artist and as a stage director," said Maestro Anton Coppola, esteemed conductor and Tampa Bay Opera Artistic Director. "As a singer, his portrayals are vivid and insightful. As a director, he possesses an imaginative talent, full if invention. His ability to clearly define dramatic situations into thoroughly satisfying results is truly impressive."
In the fall of 2009, Mr. Anthony joined Shreveport Opera as the Resident Stage Director/Director of Production where he will and has directed MAN OF LA MANCHA, LA BOHEME, DON GIOVANNI, MADAMA BUTTERFLY, THE MERRY WIDOW, TOSCA, LA TRAGEDIE DE CARMEN, MANON lESCAUT, THE FANTASTICKS, and AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS. He will also direct a new production of TOSCA for the Florentine Opera, and recently directed THE BARBER OF SEVILLE and THE MERRY WIDOW at Opera on the James, CARMEN, THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO, and RIGOLETTO for St. Petersburg Opera. In the summer of 2008 he joined David Gatley as a Faculty member and Assistant Director of the Janeic Opera Company at Brevard Music Center Opera Program specializing in Movement and Acting. His productions at Brevard include SUOR ANGELICA, TINTYPES, ELIXIR OF LOVE, and THREEPENNY OPERA. Other directing credits include SACCO & VANZETTI with Tampa Bay Opera, MAN OF LA MANCHA, SWEENEY TODD, LE TRAGEDIE DE CARMEN, and HANSEL & GRETEL with the Augusta Opera, FACE ON THE BARROOM FLOOR and THE MEDIUM with Diamond Opera Theater, DIE FLEDERMAUS at the University of Texas, LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST with Tampa Bay Opera, as well as choreographing MAN OF LA MANCHA with Cleveland Opera, DIE FLEDERMAUS with Opera Grand Rapids, DIE FLEDERMAUS, TALES OF HOFFMANN, THE MIKADO, and LA TRAVIATA at the Janeic Opera Company. Anthony was Artistic Director for 2 season of the Diamond Opera Theater in Hudson, New York, and has lead movement and acting Master Classes for young singers at Florida Grand Opera, Nashville Opera, Virginia Opera, Brevard Music Center, Shreveport Opera, Festival Lyrique de Belle Ile en Mer, SUNY Fredonia, University of Texas, Astonia Music Festival, Central Methodist University, Texas State University, University of Wisconson Green Bay, and
Virginia Governors School.
